Valuations Background

The Valuations tab includes a financial data table and market cap graph. The financial data table in Valuations provides instantaneous financial averages, profiling the closest publicly traded corporations within a specified industry, geographic area, organization size (e.g., revenue), and/or year.

The Peer Analysis tab includes all data found in the Valuations tab, plus additional features. The Executive Compensation Assessor will only display either the Valuations or Peer Analyses tab, depending on the edition used by the subscriber. Please contact ERI for more information about the various editions available in the Executive Compensation Assessor.

Note: Valuations data are only available for areas in the United States and Canada.  User-defined averages are not allowed in the Valuations tab.

To Build a List of Companies

1.Create a list of companies by changing the criteria used to filter the list of companies displayed in the table:

Select a Area using one of three options:

oBegin typing a search string (i.e., the name of the area you are looking for) in the Area field and click on the desired area listed

oClick the Browse button in the Area field to open the Browse Areas dialog

oClick the Averages button to Select, Edit, or Create a User-Defined Average

Select an Industry using one of two options:

oBegin typing a search string (i.e., the name of the industry you are looking for) in the Industry field and click on the desired industry listed

oClick the Browse button in the Industry field to open the Industries dialog

Adjust the minimum and maximum Total Revenue settings by typing in minimum or maximum values OR by sliding the end bars on the number line.  (Please note: Organization size for most industries is defined in terms of annual Revenue.  For some industries, the organization size is defined in terms of Assets, Fiscal Year Budget, or # of Employees.  The Total Revenue range will be labeled accordingly.) (See note below.)

Click the button to read definitions of the additional filters available: Total Revenue, Total Assets, Net Income, Market Cap, Stockholder Equity, Stock Price, TSR 1 Year, TSR 3 Year, and EPS.  Click Add to add one of these additional filter to the criteria list (up to three filters can be selected, in addition to the revenue range).  Click Cancel to exit the Add Criteria window without selecting an additional filter.

2.To add individual companies to the list, scroll to the bottom of the table and double-click on the last row.  Then search through a list of all U.S. public companies and select an individual company to add.

3.Click on the saved list drop-down to load a list of companies that was previously saved.

Please note: The list of companies displayed in Valuations includes those companies with an organization size (e.g., revenue) inside the selected range limits (plus any other filters added via the button) and matches the comparables companies list displayed under Refine List in the Survey & Proxy Analyses screen. Changing the minimum or maximum organization size only affects the number of companies in the list; it does not affect the organization size selected in Organization Data or the dots displayed on the graph.  Changing Organization Data impacts two things: (1) it modifies what is shown in the graph, and (2) it adjusts the range by setting the end points to 50% below and 50% above the organization size selected in Organization Data.  Changing the organization size in Organization Data only affects the Valuations company list so far as it modifies the minimum and maximum settings in the revenue range.

To Select a Filing Year

Select "Latest" (the default) or a specific year in the drop-down menu next to Filing Year

Note: The Filing Year displayed will be the “Latest” unless a specific year is selected.  When the “Latest” year is used, the year of data shown in Valuations is set to the year of compensation data for that company's graph dot as shown in the Survey & Proxy Analyses tab — not the salary planning date.  This provides consistency between the analyses performed on the Survey & Proxy Analyses tab and the Peer Analysis tab.  The "Latest" date displayed may vary by company since there is a slight lag in data collection and analysis, and companies may define the “end of the year” differently.  When a specific year is selected instead of the “Latest,” then all companies will display the same year of data. When you change the Filing Year, the companies listed in Valuations do not change.  It simply shows the selected year for those companies that are currently shown in the table.  If you want to view a year other than the "Latest" for each company, select the year first and then update the revenue range or industry.
