Build a Company List - Step 1

The Customize Executives feature allows the user to build a list of comparable companies and then choose executives for display in the Peer Analyses table (only available for areas in the United States and Canada).  This process involves 2 steps: Build a Company List (Step 1) and Choose Executives (Step 2).

To Build a Company List (Step 1)

1.In Peer Analyses, click Create List to create a new list OR Edit List to edit a previously saved list.

2.In Step 1, create a list of companies by changing the criteria used to filter the list of companies displayed in the table:

Select United States OR Canada in the Area field.

Select an Industry using one of these options:

oBegin typing a search string (i.e., the name of the industry you are looking for) in the Industry field and click on the desired industry listed

oEnter an industry code (eSIC, NAICS, or usSEC)

oClick the Browse button in the Industry field to open the Search Industries dialog

In the Criteria field, adjust the minimum and maximum Total Revenue settings by typing in minimum or maximum values.  (Please note: Organization size for most industries is defined in terms of annual Revenue.  For some industries, the organization size is defined in terms of Assets, Fiscal Year Budget, or # of Employees.  The Total Revenue range will be labeled accordingly.) (See note below.)

Click the Add Criteria button to review additional filters available, with definitions provided:  Stockholder Equity, Total Assets, EPS, Net Income, Free Cash Flow, Market Cap, Return on Equity, Return on Invested Capital, Stock Price, and TSF for 1, 3, 5, 7, or 10 Years.  Highlight a filter and click Add to add an additional filter to the criteria list.

3.To add individual companies to the list, click the Add Company button.  Then search through a list of all U.S. or Canadian public companies and select an individual company to add.

4.Click on a saved list to load a list of companies that was previously saved in Step 1.

To modify a previously saved list, make changes in Step 1 and click .

To delete a previously saved list, click the Step 1 dialog.

5.To export your company list in Step 1 to Excel, click .

6.When your list of companies is complete, click Done to proceed to Choose Executives (Step 2).

Please note: The list of companies displayed in Step 1 includes those companies with an organization size (e.g., revenue) inside the minimum and maximum limits selected (plus any other filters added via the Add Criteria button) and matches the comparables companies list displayed under Refine List in the Survey & Proxy Analyses screen. Changing the minimum or maximum organization size in Step 1 only affects the number of companies in the Step 1 company list; it does not affect the organization size selected in Organization Data or the dots displayed on the graph.  Changing the organization size in Organization Data impacts two things: (1) it modifies what is shown in the graph, and (2) it adjusts the end points selected in Step 1 to 50% below and 50% above the organization size selected in Organization Data.  Changing the organization size in Organization Data only affects the Step 1 company list so far as it modifies the minimum and maximum settings in the revenue range.

To Select a Filing Year

Select "Latest" (the default) or a specific year in the drop-down menu for Filing Year.

Note: The Filing Year displayed will be the “Latest” unless a specific year is selected.  When the “Latest” year is used, the year of data shown in the Step 1 table is set to the year of compensation data for that company's graph dot as shown in the Survey & Proxy Analyses tab — not the salary planning date.  This provides consistency between the analyses performed on the Survey & Proxy Analyses tab and the Peer Analyses tab.  The "Latest" date displayed may vary by company since there is a slight lag in data collection and analysis, and companies may define the “end of the year” differently.  When a specific year is selected instead of the “Latest,” then all companies will display the same year of data. When you change the Filing Year, the companies listed in the Step 1 table do not change.  It simply shows the selected year for those companies that are currently shown in the table.  If you want to view a year other than the "Latest" for each company, select the year first and then update the revenue range or industry (see Step 2 above).
